Yesterday, 300,000 square miles of ocean along the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts was designated as critical habitat, the largest ever designation in US history, which is used to protect areas that important to threatened species. The ruling was handed down by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the US Fish and Wildlife Service in an attempt to protect the nesting and roaming habitat of the loggerhead sea turtle. Loggerheads were declared endangered in 1978 and continue to struggle against threats from climate change, fishing nets and ocean pollution.
