Yum! Brands, which owns KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, announced last week that they will source 100 percent of their palm oil from responsible sources by the end of 2017. After a 2012 study found that most palm oil was produced in areas being rapidly deforested just for palm oil, the number of companies that have agreed to source it from sustainable manufacturers went from zero percent to 60. Further, the five biggest palm oil producers started the Sustainable Palm Oil Manifesto and instituted a temporary moratorium on deforestation. Traditional palm oil production destroys rainforests and endangers orangutans who are displaced or hunted down for living in their natural habitat.
