BIG Architects’ green “U”, a plan to protect Manhattan from future storms, was recently awarded $335 million as part of the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rebuild by Design Competition. The U-shaped green space would encircle Manhattan’s flood zones and make them more resilient to storm surges while doing double duty to provide social and environmental benefits to nearby communities.
