In protest to Zaha Hadid’s designs for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Stadium, 2013 Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito has proposed an alternative stadium plan that could slash the current expected price tag in half. Officially announced early this week, Ito’s proposal calls for a renovation of the existing stadium and an immediate halt to Japan’s planned demolition of that stadium scheduled in July. The alternative design was announced just as an online petition headed by Japanese architects against Hadid’s designs reached 13,000 signatures.
