This won’t be the first time you’ve heard that the man-made chemicals in non-stick coating aren’t exactly healthy. The world’s leading scientists signed a statement to tell the world that they are highly concerned over the spread of certain chemicals called poly and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) which are in most non-stick cookware and some types of food packaging. The group of over 200 top scientists published their opinion in Environmental Health Perspectives in a document called “The Madrid Statement.” In animal studies, some PFASs have been found to cause liver toxicity, disruption of metabolism, the immune and endocrine systems, tumors in multiple organs, neonatal toxicity and death as well as other health issues. PFASs are emitted during industrial and firefighting operations and find their way into drinking water as well as the air and soil. The scientists propose a number of solutions including a mandate that product manufacturers label products with PFSAs and stop using them altogether when safer alternatives exist.
